HOW WE DO IT We promote leadership, discipline, healthy lifestyle, good morals. Most activities provide an element of AIDS and HIV awareness. We facilitate the following activities: For the community HIV Pastoral Counselling We have a fully- trained HIV counsellor, who is supported by the pastors of member churches as necessary. The farms in the surrounding area are often very large, with great distances between them and the nearest town. We have been approached to reach out to the rural community Specifically for young people Because of the lack of entertainment, particularly for young people, we try to provide diversionary activities to keep them out of mischief, and away from the shebeens (illegal liquor outlet and meeting place) and drugs. We also try to identify and support youth leaders in the community. Friday night coffee bar This is the foundation of our youth work. Every Friday night, young people between the ages of 10-18 are welcome for an evening of supervised games such as ping-pong, snooker, and board games. Each of the participating churches hosts the coffee bar for one year. Leadership Courses
Annual Youth Weekend By giving youth leaders from the community leadership skills, we hope to support them in influencing their peers towards a healthier and more positive lifestyle. This Annual Youth Weekend is a gathering of the youth leaders, whose assistance we value at all our events and especially the Friday night coffee bar. School in the Wilderness (SOS Camp, Villiersdorp) During 2008, a group of 21 Uniondale teenagers were accompanied to this well-known weekend camp. Activities promote leadership, co-operation, and healthy living through various sporting and outdoor activities. This was such a successful activity that we hope to raise enough funds for another group to attend this year. Handcrafts Knitting and Sewing This is no longer a school subject, nor is it a skill that is being passed on to our youth by their parents. A number of young people have expressed an interest in learning these skills. We provide the materials, and co-ordinate volunteers from the community to teach the youngsters how to knit and sew.
